Where You Charge Changes Your Cost Dramatically
Unlike gasoline, where the price is roughly the same wherever you fill up, EV charging cost varies enormously by location and method. Charging at home overnight can cost a third โ or less โ of what the same energy costs from a public DC fast charger. This calculator breaks down exactly how much that difference adds up to over a year of normal driving.
The Three Charging Modes
- Home (Level 2): the cheapest and most common โ about 80% of all EV charging happens overnight at home, per industry estimates
- Public Level 2: found at shopping centers, workplaces, and hotels โ slower than DC fast, but moderately priced and sometimes free
- DC Fast Charging: the fastest option, found along highways โ also the most expensive per kWh, reflecting the cost of the infrastructure
The Math Behind the Numbers

Home charging includes a charging-loss adjustment (typically 8โ12%) for AC-to-DC conversion in the car's onboard charger โ a detail many simpler calculators skip, which slightly understates real home charging cost.
How to Use This Calculator
Enter your typical daily mileage and your EV's efficiency in miles per kWh (check your car's manual or trip computer). The default rates reflect 2026 U.S. averages, but swap in your actual electricity rate and local public charging prices for a more precise comparison โ rates vary significantly by state and by network.
Why Home Charging Wins
Residential electricity rates are simply lower than what public networks charge, and public networks also need to recoup significant infrastructure costs (a DC fast charging station can cost $30,000โ$150,000 to install) โ that gets baked into the per-kWh price. If you can charge at home, even most nights, it's almost always your cheapest option by a wide margin.
When DC Fast Charging Makes Sense Anyway
Despite the higher cost, DC fast charging is the right tool for road trips or when you need a quick top-up and don't have time to wait for slower charging. Treating it as an occasional convenience rather than your primary charging method keeps your overall costs close to the home-charging numbers shown here.
Worked Example
A driver covering 37 miles/day in an EV averaging 3.5 mi/kWh needs about 10.6 kWh/day. At a $0.17/kWh home rate with 90% charging efficiency, that's roughly $730/year. The same energy from public Level 2 at $0.32/kWh runs about $1,240/year, and exclusively using DC fast charging at $0.48/kWh would cost around $1,855/year โ nearly 2.5x the home-charging cost for identical driving.
