Senior Bonus Deduction Calculator
Turning 65 unlocks a brand-new $6,000 federal deduction โ $12,000 for a qualifying couple โ stacked on top of everything you already claim. See exactly what it's worth to you.
Enter your details โ the calculator applies the $6,000-per-person cap, the 6% MAGI phaseout, and stacks it with your standard deduction.
What Is the OBBBA Senior Bonus Deduction?
The One Big Beautiful Bill Act created a brand-new $6,000 deduction for taxpayers age 65 or older โ up to $12,000 for a married couple where both spouses qualify. It runs for tax years 2025 through 2028, applies whether you itemize or take the standard deduction, and stacks on top of the existing age-65 standard deduction add-on you may already be claiming.
How the Phaseout Actually Works
Each qualifying senior's $6,000 deduction is reduced by 6% of household MAGI above the threshold โ $75,000 for single/head of household, $150,000 for married filing jointly. Crucially, when both spouses qualify, each $6,000 deduction is reduced by that same 6% figure, so the total household reduction is effectively doubled.
Total Senior Bonus = Per-Person Deduction × Number of Qualifying Seniors
That means a single qualifying senior and a couple where both spouses qualify both lose their deduction entirely at the same MAGI ceiling โ $175,000 single/HoH, $250,000 joint โ because the per-person reduction rate effectively doubles when two people are claiming it.
Phaseout Thresholds at a Glance
| Filing Status | Phaseout Starts | Fully Phased Out |
|---|---|---|
| Single / Head of Household | $75,000 MAGI | $175,000 MAGI |
| Married Filing Jointly | $150,000 MAGI | $250,000 MAGI |
| Married Filing Separately | Not eligible for this deduction | |
This Stacks With What You Already Get
The senior bonus isn't a replacement for anything โ it's an extra layer on top of deductions you may already claim. This calculator adds together your regular standard deduction, the existing age-65-or-blind additional standard deduction, and the new senior bonus to show your full combined benefit.
Who Actually Qualifies?
- You must be 65 or older by December 31 of the tax year
- A valid Social Security number is required for each qualifying individual
- Married Filing Separately is not eligible โ joint filers must file together to claim it
- You don't need to be receiving Social Security to qualify โ age is the only trigger
Worked Example
Take a married couple filing jointly in 2026, both 65 or older, with a combined MAGI of $220,000. They're $70,000 over the $150,000 threshold, so each $6,000 deduction is reduced by 6% ร $70,000 = $4,200, leaving $1,800 each โ $3,600 combined, instead of the full $12,000 they'd get below the threshold.
