The 2026 Tax Credit Reality
Section 48E (commercial/lease/PPA): Active through 2027, claimed by the system owner
This is the single biggest change in the U.S. solar market for 2026. If you buy a system outright with cash or a loan, there is no federal tax credit anymore โ full stop. The only remaining federal pathway is third-party ownership: a lease or Power Purchase Agreement (PPA), where the financing company owns the system, claims the Section 48E commercial credit, and is expected to pass some of that value to you through a lower monthly payment.
How System Size Is Calculated

Your system needs to generate roughly as much electricity as you use (adjusted by your offset target). The "production factor" โ kWh generated per kW of panels per year โ depends heavily on your region's sunlight, which is why it varies so much across the country.

Why Cost Per Watt Varies So Much
Panels themselves are only about 10โ15% of total system cost โ the rest is labor, permitting, inverters, racking, and installer overhead. Larger systems typically have a lower cost per watt (fixed costs spread over more capacity), while complex roofs, shading, or a main panel upgrade can push costs higher.
Lease/PPA vs. Buying
- Cash or loan purchase: you own the system outright, no federal credit in 2026, full savings go to you long-term
- Lease: fixed monthly payment, no upfront cost, the leasing company owns the system and claims any tax credit
- PPA: you pay per kWh produced (usually below utility rates), same ownership structure as a lease
