Real-World Worked Examples
Example 1 โ Fencing a rectangular backyard
Your backyard is 15 metres long and 8 metres wide. You want to fence all four sides. Using the rectangle formula: P = 2 ร (15 + 8) = 2 ร 23 = 46 metres of fencing. Add 5โ10% for gate openings and overlaps, so you'd order about 50โ51 metres.
Example 2 โ Skirting board for a lounge room
Your lounge room is 5.5m ร 4.2m. Perimeter = 2 ร (5.5 + 4.2) = 2 ร 9.7 = 19.4 metres. You'd subtract the width of any doorways (say, two 0.9m doors = 1.8m), leaving 17.6m of skirting board to buy. Add 10% for cuts and joins: order about 19.4 metres.
Example 3 โ Garden edging for a circular bed
Your circular garden bed has a radius of 2 metres. Circumference = 2 ร ฯ ร 2 โ 12.57 metres of edging. Round up to 13 metres to account for joining the ends.

Perimeter vs Area โ Understanding the Difference
