How to Calculate Tiles for Any Room
Tiling a floor or wall is a significant investment โ both in time and money. Running out of tiles mid-project is a nightmare, especially if your chosen tile is discontinued or from a different batch. Our Tile Calculator ensures you buy exactly the right amount, with a sensible waste allowance built in.
Why You Need a Waste Factor
No matter how precise your measurements, tiles are cut, cracked, and discarded during installation. The standard waste factor for a straight grid layout is 10%. For diagonal or complex patterns, allow 15โ20%. Never order tiles without a waste buffer โ it’s one of the most common and costly tiling mistakes.
Grout Gap and Its Effect on Tile Count
The grout gap (also called joint width) affects how many tiles fit in a given space. A 3mm grout gap on 600mm tiles has a minor effect, but on smaller mosaic tiles the grout percentage of total area becomes more significant. This calculator accounts for grout gaps in the tile count.
Buying by the Box
Most tiles are sold in boxes containing a set number of tiles or covering a set area (e.g., 1.08 mยฒ per box). Enter your tiles-per-box value to get the exact number of boxes to purchase. Always round up to the nearest box โ partial boxes can’t be returned in most cases.
