How Much Attic Insulation Do You Need?
Attic insulation is rated by R-value โ its resistance to heat flow. Building codes set minimum targets by climate zone, since colder regions need more insulation to keep heat in (and hot regions to keep heat out) than milder areas.

The Formula
Additional Thickness = R-Value Gap รท R-Value per Inch
This tells you how much more material (in inches of depth) you need to add to reach your zone's target โ not the total amount, just what's missing.
How to Use This Calculator
Select your IECC climate zone (a quick search for your state or county's zone will confirm this). Enter your current R-value if you have any existing insulation โ check old batt labels, or estimate blown-in insulation depth against a manufacturer's depth chart. Add your attic's square footage and the R-value per inch of the material you're considering.
Why Material Choice Matters
- Blown fiberglass: ~R-2.2 to R-2.7 per inch โ needs more depth for the same R-value
- Blown cellulose: ~R-3.2 to R-3.8 per inch โ denser, often a better fit for limited attic height
- Fiberglass batts: ~R-3.0 to R-3.8 per inch depending on density
A higher R-per-inch material reaches your target with less depth โ useful in attics with limited clearance.
Going Above Code Minimum
Code minimums are exactly that โ minimums, not necessarily the most cost-effective choice. In extreme climates, insulating beyond the code target can pay back faster than the marginal R-value increase might suggest, since heating and cooling costs compound over many years.
Worked Example
A 1,500 sq ft attic in Zone 4-5 (target R-49) currently has R-19 batts: the gap is R-30. Using blown cellulose at R-3.2/inch, that requires about 9.4 inches of additional material โ roughly 1,175 cubic feet, at an estimated cost based on your local material pricing.
