Why Your Roof Is Bigger Than Your House's Footprint

The ground-level footprint of your home isn't the same as your roof's actual surface area — a sloped roof has more surface than a flat one covering the same footprint. The steeper the pitch, the bigger the difference, which is exactly why roofers always calculate pitch before ordering materials.

The Formula

A "square" is contractor shorthand for 100 square feet of roofing — materials are quoted and ordered by the square, even though they're packaged in bundles that cover about 33.3 sq ft each (3 bundles per square).

Reading Roof Pitch

Pitch is expressed as rise over a 12-inch run — a "6/12" pitch rises 6 inches for every 12 inches of horizontal run. Per the International Residential Code, standard asphalt shingles require a minimum 4/12 pitch; anything lower needs a low-slope modification with double-layer ice and water shield.

Choosing a Waste Factor

• 10%: simple gable roofs with minimal cutting
• 15%: hip roofs, which need more cuts at the hips
• 20%+: roofs with multiple valleys, dormers, skylights, or complex intersecting planes

Worked Example

A 40×30 ft footprint (1,200 sq ft) at a 6/12 pitch (multiplier 1.118): actual roof area is about 1,342 sq ft, or 14 squares (rounded up). At 3 bundles per square plus 15% waste, that's roughly 48 bundles needed.

Complex Roofs Need Section-by-Section Measurement

If your roof has multiple sections (an L-shape, attached garage, dormers), measure each rectangular section separately, apply the pitch multiplier to each, and add the actual areas together before converting to squares — a single blended estimate can hide significant errors on complex roofs.
