What Is FFMI and Why It Matters

The scale tells you total weight, but not what that weight is made of. Fat-Free Mass Index (FFMI) fixes that by measuring muscle mass relative to height, the same way BMI measures total weight relative to height โ€” except FFMI strips out body fat first, so two people with identical BMI can have very different FFMI if one carries far more muscle.

FFMI starts with Lean Body Mass (LBM): your total body weight minus fat mass. From there, FFMI = LBM (kg) รท height (m)ยฒ. As a more critical look at that "natty limit" claim points out, genetics and measurement error mean some natural lifters do exceed it.
