Australia — How Tax is Calculated
Australia uses a progressive income tax system with rates for 2024–25 of: 0% up to $18,200; 19% from $18,201–$45,000; 32.5% from $45,001–$120,000; 37% from $120,001–$180,000; and 45% above $180,000. The Medicare Levy of 2% applies to most taxpayers. The Low Income Tax Offset (LITO) reduces tax for incomes below $66,667. The Superannuation Guarantee requires employers to contribute 11.5% of your salary into super — this is on top of your salary for most employees.
USA — How Tax is Calculated
The US federal tax system has seven brackets for 2024: 10%, 12%, 22%, 24%, 32%, 35%, and 37%. Standard deductions are $14,600 (single) and $29,200 (married filing jointly). FICA taxes add 6.2% Social Security (up to $168,600 wage base) and 1.45% Medicare on all income. State income taxes vary — this calculator uses federal tax only. 401(k) contributions reduce your taxable income dollar for dollar.
UK — How Tax is Calculated
UK income tax for 2024–25: Personal Allowance of £12,570 tax-free; Basic Rate 20% from £12,571–£50,270; Higher Rate 40% from £50,271–£125,140; Additional Rate 45% above £125,140. National Insurance Class 1 employee contributions: 8% from £12,570–£50,270, 2% above £50,270. Pension contributions reduce your taxable income. Student loan repayments are 9% of income above the threshold (Plan 1: £24,990; Plan 2: £27,295).
Canada — How Tax is Calculated
Canada has federal tax brackets of 15%, 20.5%, 26%, 29%, and 33%, plus provincial tax which varies by province. CPP contributions are 5.95% of earnings between $3,500 and $68,500.
