What Is a Superannuation Calculator and How Does It Work?
A superannuation calculator estimates your super balance at retirement by combining your current super balance, annual employer contributions (based on the SGC rate), investment returns, and salary growth over your remaining working years. It's a superannuation growth calculator, superannuation contribution calculator, and superannuation forecast calculator all in one.
This free superannuation calculator uses compound interest to project your balance from today to age 67 — Australia's preservation age for most people. Enter your salary and age and it instantly shows your annual employer super contribution, monthly super payment, and projected retirement balance.
Superannuation Calculator Example — $80,000 Salary at Age 35
Here's how the superannuation calculation works on an $80,000 salary with an existing $50,000 balance at the 2026–27 SGC rate of 12%:
That's the superannuation formula in action: $80,000 × 12% = $9,600 per year from your employer. Compounded over 32 years at 7% returns with salary growth, the superannuation growth turns a $50,000 starting balance into over $1.2 million.
Superannuation Contribution Calculator — How SGC Is Calculated
The superannuation contribution formula is straightforward: your employer multiplies your ordinary time earnings (OTE) by the current SGC rate. From 1 July 2026, that rate is 12%.
| Financial Year | SGC Rate | On $80,000 salary |
|---|---|---|
| 2023–24 | 11.0% | $8,800/yr |
| 2024–25 | 11.5% | $9,200/yr |
| 2025–26 | 11.5% | $9,200/yr |
| 2026–27 | 12.0% | $9,600/yr |
Superannuation Growth Calculator — How Compound Interest Builds Your Balance
Superannuation growth comes from three sources: employer contributions, voluntary contributions you make yourself, and investment returns inside the fund. The investment earnings inside super are taxed at only 15% — well below most Australians' marginal tax rate — which is why super is one of the most tax-effective savings vehicles available.
Superannuation Retirement Calculator Australia — How Much Do You Need?
ASFA (Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia) benchmarks for a comfortable retirement lifestyle:
| Age | Rough super target | ASFA comfortable retirement benchmark |
|---|---|---|
| 30 | ~$45,000 | $595,000 (single) $690,000 (couple) at retirement age 67 |
| 35 | ~$85,000 | |
| 40 | ~$145,000 | |
| 50 | ~$320,000 | |
| 60 | ~$550,000 |
Boosting Your Balance with Voluntary Contributions
Employer SGC alone may not deliver the superannuation income you need in retirement. Voluntary contributions are the most effective lever available:
- Concessional (pre-tax) contributions — salary sacrifice or personal deductible contributions. Capped at $30,000 per year (2026–27), inclusive of employer SGC. Taxed at 15% inside super vs your marginal rate.
- Non-concessional (after-tax) contributions — capped at $120,000 per year (or $360,000 over 3 years under the bring-forward rule).
- Government co-contribution — if you earn under $58,445 and make a non-concessional contribution, the government may match up to $500.
- Spouse contributions — if your spouse earns under $40,000, contributing to their super may earn you an 18% tax offset up to $540.
