Electricity Plan Comparison

The Electricity Plan Comparison calculator compares two plans using energy usage, variable rate, and fixed charge. It returns each plan's modeled cost, the absolute difference, and the cheaper plan.

Formula

$\text{Plan cost}=\text{Usage kWh}\times\text{Rate per kWh}+\text{Fixed charge}$

All inputs are required to be non-negative. The cheaper label is based only on the calculated totals.

Worked example

For 500 kWh, Plan A at $0.28/kWh plus$20 fixed, and Plan B at $0.25/kWh plus$40 fixed:

1. Plan A: 500 x $0.28 + $20 = $160.
2. Plan B: 500 x $0.25 + $40 = $165.
3. Plan A is cheaper by $5 for that usage level.

Questions

Can the cheaper plan change with usage?

Yes. A plan with a lower fixed charge may win at low usage while a lower variable rate may win at high usage.

Does this include taxes and rebates?

No. Enter rates and fixed charges that reflect the comparison you want; the module does not add taxes, credits, demand charges, or time-of-use periods.

What does equal mean?

It means the two modeled totals are exactly equal under the entered numbers.

Limitations

This is a single-period arithmetic comparison. Verify contract terms, meter fees, supply charges, seasonal usage, and tariff conditions with the provider.
