Hours Calculator

The Hours Calculator finds worked time between a start and end clock time, subtracts an optional break in minutes, and returns hours, remaining minutes, decimal hours, and a readable duration.

Calculation method

Times are entered as HH:MM. The calculator converts each time to minutes after midnight. If the end time is earlier than the start time, it assumes the shift crosses midnight and adds 24 hours to the end.

The break cannot exceed the calculated span.

Worked example

For a shift from 09:15 to 17:45 with a 30-minute break:

1. Clock span: 8 hours 30 minutes.
2. Subtract break: 510 - 30 = 480 minutes.
3. Result: 8 hours, or 8.00 decimal hours.

For 22:00 to 06:00, the calculator assumes an overnight shift and returns 8 hours before any break.

Questions

Does it handle overnight shifts?

Yes. An end time earlier than the start time is treated as the following day.

Can breaks include partial minutes?

No. The break input is measured in whole minutes by the form's calculation contract.

Does this calculate overtime?

No. It reports elapsed worked time only. Overtime rules, unpaid split shifts, and pay rates must be handled separately.

Limitations

The tool supports one start time, one end time, and one break duration. It does not account for time zones, daylight-saving transitions, multiple breaks, or calendar dates.
