Where This Converter Gets Its Rates
โ Live rates pulled from the European Central Bank's daily reference rates via the open Frankfurter API โ no key required, refreshed each business day around 16:00 CET โ last checked June 2026.
Most "currency converters" you'll find online are either a static table that goes stale within days, or a paid API hidden behind a key. This one pulls live from Frankfurter, an open-source service that republishes the European Central Bank's official daily reference rates for free, with no authentication and no usage cap for normal traffic. You can see the ECB's own published rates directly at the ECB reference rates page if you want to cross-check the source data yourself. The trade-off worth knowing: ECB rates update once per business day around 4pm CET, not tick-by-tick โ so this reflects today's official rate, not the exact rate your bank or card network applies at the precise second you make a purchase, which typically includes its own margin on top.
This matters more than it sounds for anyone actually transferring money internationally rather than just satisfying curiosity. A 1-2% spread between the reference rate and what your bank charges is completely normal and not a sign anything's wrong โ it's how banks and remittance services make their margin. If you're sending a meaningful amount overseas, comparing that spread across two or three providers before committing is usually worth more than chasing the "true" mid-market rate down to the fourth decimal place.

Converting AUD to USD
Amount: $1,000 AUD
Live rate: 1 AUD = 0.6520 USD (example)
1,000 ร 0.6520 = $652.00 USDOn weekends and EU public holidays, the ECB doesn't publish new rates, so you'll see the most recent business day's figure rather than a gap โ that's expected behaviour, not a bug. If your travel money provider or bank quotes a noticeably different number, that gap is their margin, not an error in this tool โ the RBA publishes its own daily AUD exchange rates if you'd like a second official reference point. For comparing the long-run value of money across decades rather than currencies, see our Inflation Calculator instead โ a different kind of "exchange rate" entirely.
Frequently Asked Questions
They're live in the sense that the tool fetches the current published rate each time you convert, rather than using a stale embedded value. The underlying ECB rates themselves update once per business day, not continuously throughout the day.
Banks and card networks add their own margin on top of the underlying market or reference rate. This tool shows the official ECB reference rate, which is a useful benchmark but not identical to what you'll be charged on a transaction.
The ECB doesn't publish new rates on weekends or EU public holidays, so the tool shows the most recent business day's rate instead. This is expected, not an error.
If the API is temporarily unreachable, the tool will show an error rather than a guessed number. Try again in a moment, or check the source directly at frankfurter.dev.
This tool covers ten major currencies: AUD, USD, EUR, GBP, JPY, NZD, CAD, SGD, CHF and CNY. The underlying data source covers around 30 currencies in total, mostly major economies tracked by the ECB.
