How is Your Due Date Calculated?

Your estimated due date (EDD) is one of the first things you’ll want to know after confirming a pregnancy. Most pregnancies last approximately 40 weeks (280 days) from the first day of the last menstrual period. Our Pregnancy Due Date Calculator gives you your EDD instantly, along with your current pregnancy week, trimester, and key milestones to look forward to.

Naegele’s Rule

The most common method for calculating a due date is Naegele’s Rule: take the first day of your last menstrual period, add one year, subtract three months, and add seven days. This is equivalent to adding 280 days (40 weeks) to your LMP date. It assumes a standard 28-day cycle with ovulation on day 14.

The Three Trimesters

  • First Trimester (Weeks 1โ€“12): Major organ development. Most miscarriages occur in this period. Morning sickness is common.
  • Second Trimester (Weeks 13โ€“26): Often called the “golden period.” Energy typically returns, and the baby’s movements become felt.
  • Third Trimester (Weeks 27โ€“40): Rapid baby growth. Preparation for birth begins.

IVF Due Date Calculation

For IVF pregnancies, the due date is calculated from the egg retrieval date. For a Day 5 blastocyst transfer, subtract 5 days from the transfer date to get the equivalent LMP date, then add 280 days. For a Day 3 transfer, subtract 3 days instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is an estimated due date?
Only about 5% of babies are born on their exact due date. Most are born within 2 weeks before or after. The EDD is a target window, not an exact date. An early ultrasound (before 12 weeks) is the most accurate dating method.
What if my cycle isn’t 28 days?
This calculator adjusts for cycle length. Longer cycles mean ovulation (and conception) happen later, pushing the due date forward. Shorter cycles do the opposite.
When should I have my first prenatal appointment?
Most doctors recommend your first prenatal visit at 8โ€“10 weeks. If you have a history of complications or are high risk, earlier is better. Contact your doctor as soon as you confirm pregnancy.
What is a full-term pregnancy?
A full-term pregnancy is 39โ€“40 weeks. Babies born at 37โ€“38 weeks are “early term,” 39โ€“40 weeks are “full term,” 41 weeks are “late term,” and 42+ weeks are “post-term.”
Can stress or health conditions affect my due date?
Your calculated due date doesn’t change, but certain conditions can lead to early delivery. Pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetes, or foetal growth issues may result in induction before the due date. Regular prenatal care is essential.
