What Is My Pregnancy Due Date — and How Is It Calculated?

Your estimated due date (EDD) is one of the first things you want to know the moment you see a positive test. It tells you when to expect your baby and gives structure to prenatal appointments, screening schedules, and birth planning — all anchored to a single date.

This pregnancy due date calculator uses Naegele’s Rule — the standard clinical method used by doctors and midwives — to calculate your EDD from your last menstrual period date. You can also enter a known conception date if you tracked ovulation.

Real Example: Calculating Pregnancy Due Date

Example — Last period: January 15, standard 28-day cycle
First day of LMPJanuary 15
Add 280 days (40 weeks)+280 days
Estimated due dateOctober 22

That’s it — LMP + 280 days = estimated due date. This is Naegele’s Rule, and it’s been the clinical standard for over 200 years.

The Due Date Formula — Naegele’s Rule

EDD (from LMP) = LMP Date + 280 days (40 weeks) EDD (from conception) = Conception Date + 266 days (38 weeks) Weeks pregnant = (Today – LMP) / 7 Adjusted EDD = LMP + 280 + (Cycle Length – 28) days
💡 Why 40 weeks from LMP but 38 from conception? Pregnancy is measured from the last menstrual period, which is 2 weeks before conception in a standard cycle. So 40 weeks from LMP = 38 weeks from actual conception — the same pregnancy, just a different starting point.

Pregnancy Trimesters — What Happens When

TrimesterWeeksMonthsKey milestones
First1–121–3Heartbeat (wk 6), organ formation, highest miscarriage risk
Second13–274–6Baby moves (wk 16–18), sex visible, viability ~22 weeks
Third28–40+7–9+Lungs mature, head engages, labour and delivery

How Accurate Is a Due Date Calculator?

The LMP-based due date assumes a 28-day cycle with ovulation on day 14. Only about 5% of babies are born on their exact estimated due date. Most births occur within 2 weeks on either side. Factors that affect accuracy:

  • Irregular cycles — if your cycle is consistently longer or shorter than 28 days, the calculator adjusts, but real variation within cycles is harder to account for
  • Early ultrasound — a scan before 13 weeks (crown-rump length measurement) is more accurate than LMP-based calculation
  • Known conception date — if you tracked ovulation and know when you conceived, use the conception date option for a potentially more accurate estimate
⚠️ This calculator is for informational purposes only. Only about 5% of babies arrive on their due date. Always confirm your due date with your healthcare provider at your first prenatal appointment. This is not medical advice.

Due-Date Estimates and Pregnancy Dating

A calculated due date is an estimate based on the date of the last menstrual period or conception assumption. Ovulation timing, cycle length, implantation, ultrasound measurements, and clinical dating can shift the estimate. Most babies are not born on the exact due date, and the result should not be used to schedule medical care without your clinician. Contact a qualified healthcare professional for pregnancy questions, warning signs, or the official gestational age used in your records.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is pregnancy due date calculated?
The standard method is Naegele’s Rule: add 280 days (40 weeks) to the first day of your last menstrual period. For a LMP of January 15, the EDD is October 22. The calculator adjusts automatically for cycle lengths other than 28 days.
How many weeks pregnant am I?
Weeks pregnant = (Today’s date − First day of LMP) ÷ 7. Enter your last period date in the calculator above and it shows your current week and trimester instantly.
How do I calculate my due date from conception?
Add 266 days (38 weeks) to your conception date. Pregnancy is counted as 40 weeks from the LMP, which is 2 weeks before conception in a standard cycle — so from conception it’s 38 weeks to the same due date.
What are the trimesters?
First trimester is weeks 1–12. Second trimester is weeks 13–27. Third trimester is weeks 28 through delivery. Full term is defined as 39–40 weeks.
How accurate is a due date calculator?
LMP-based due dates are estimates — only about 5% of babies are born on the exact due date. An early ultrasound (before 13 weeks) is more accurate. Most births happen within 2 weeks of the EDD.
