Word Counter

The Word Counter counts words, characters, characters without spaces, sentences, paragraphs, and estimated reading time in pasted text.

Counting rules

The calculator trims the input for the word count, splits non-empty whitespace-separated groups into words, counts every JavaScript character, removes whitespace for the no-spaces total, and identifies sentences from ., !, and ? separators. Paragraphs are counted from non-empty newline-separated blocks.

Reading time is rounded up using 200 words per minute:

Worked example

For a 400-word article:

• Word count: 400.
• Reading time: ceil(400 / 200) = 2 minutes.
• Character totals depend on the exact spaces, punctuation, line breaks, and Unicode characters in the text.

Questions

Why can word counts differ between tools?

Tools use different rules for hyphenated words, numbers, symbols, line breaks, and whitespace. This calculator uses whitespace-separated groups after trimming the input.

Does reading time account for reading difficulty?

No. It uses a fixed 200 words-per-minute estimate. Dense technical prose may take longer, while simple text may take less time.

Are spaces included in the character count?

Yes, the main character count includes every character in the original text. The separate no-spaces count removes whitespace.

Limitations

The calculator does not perform linguistic tokenization, language detection, readability analysis, or platform-specific counting beyond the metrics exposed by its calculation module.
